About region

Kanto is the first region in the Pokémon universe and in the popular series, games and anime. It was then followed by Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, and Galar. It is modeled and named after the Kantō region of Japan, which includes, amongst other cities, the capital Tōkyō, where Game Freak is headquartered. Kanto is the only one that shares its name with a real-world location. The resemblance between the bay formations seen on the in-game map and the actual Sagami Bay, Suruga Bay, and Tokyo Bay formations is particularly striking. Kanto also has some elements of Chūbu.

Kanto lies to the east of Johto; they presumably make up a small continent; to the south of Kanto are the Sevii and Orange Islands. Hoenn, introduced in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, is supposedly further to the southwest. Routes located wholly within Kanto are numbered 1 to 25; routes 26, 27, and 28 connect Kanto with Johto. Supposedly to the north of this continent is the Sinnoh region. Unova is in a considerable distance away and it's unknown where both it and Kalos are in relation to Kanto.

In the first generation of games, Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, Kanto was the only region to explore, featuring a variety of environments, such as urban locales and mountainous, wooded and oceanic routes. In Gold, Silver and Crystal, which introduced Johto, the player character character was able to travel to Kanto (by either steamboat, surfing or the magnet train) travelling between Goldenrod City in Johto and Saffron City in Kanto after completing their journeys through Johto. Since these games occupied an in-universe timeline a few years after their predecessors, some changes were introduced. In late 2004, Pokémon Red, Pokémon Green, and Pokémon Blue were remade as new titles for the Game Boy Advance called Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, which incorporated new elements. In late 2018, Pokémon Yellow was remade as two new games for the Nintendo Switch called Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.

Two areas of the Kanto region, Saffron City and the Pokémon Stadium, are playable in HAL Laboratory's popular Super Smash Bros. fighting games. In the Nintendo 64 version, Saffron City is a cityscape battlefield while the Pokémon Stadium is a basic arena and transforms to water, grass, rock and fire type battlefields in Super Smash Bros. Melee. With the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl comes a new Pokémon Stadium 2 to play on.

In the anime, the protagonist Ash Ketchum is a resident of Pallet Town, and began his journey by touring Pokémon gyms in Kanto with Misty from Cerulean City and Brock from Pewter City. Season 1 and Season 9 of the anime are set in Kanto. Location names in the anime sometimes differ from those in the games. Season 23 and 24 of the anime is also the set in Kanto as Ash and his new friend Goh from Vermilion City work as research assistants.

Cities and towns

Pallet Town
Pallet Town (マサラタウン, Masara Taun) is the hometown of the protagonist Ash Ketchum, of the Pokémon anime, and the Red of the Pokémon Adventures. It is also the home of Professor Oak, who gets them started with their first Pokémon, as well as Professor Oak's grandson (the player character-named rival in the games, Gary Oak in the anime, and Blue in Pokémon Adventures). It is also a hometown to Delia Ketchum, the main protagonist, Ash Ketchum's mother. It is based on Satoshi Tajiri's hometown, Shimoda.

Viridian City

At the Poké Mart, the player character will receive a package to deliver to Professor Oak in exchange for the Pokédex and 5 Poké Balls. When the player character first arrives, the gym is locked. Once the other seven Gym Leaders are defeated, the Viridian Gym Leader, who is revealed to be Giovanni, will re-open his Ground-type gym.

Pewter City
Based on: Maebashi
Pewter City (ニビシティ, Nibi Shiti) located northwest of the region, between Viridian Forest and Mt. Moon. Pewter City is the first available city with a Gym Leader. Brock is the Pewter City Gym Leader and specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. The city has two exits, to the east is Route 3 leading to Route 4 and Mt. Moon and in the south is Route 2 leading to Viridian City.

Cerulean City
Cerulean City (ハナダシティ, Hanada Shiti) is a seaside city located in the northern Kanto is the third city visited in the region by the protagonist, and the location of the second Gym Leader, Misty. She is a Water-type Trainer, who is in charge of a swimming pool-style arena. It has some remarkable places such as a bike shop and the gym. It is situated near the sea inlet to the north with Saffron city to the south and Mt. Moon to the west.

Vermilion City
Based on: Yokohama
Vermilion City (クチバシティ, Kuchiba Shiti) is a large port city that is home to the Electric-type gym leader Lt. Surge. Vermilion City is the only Kanto city to have a port, which houses a luxurious ship known as the S.S Anne. The S. S Anne sails around the world and returns to Vermilion city once in a year. It sails from Olivine town in Johto to Vermilion harbor. There, the player character will encounter the rival again and battle him. After the player character exits with the HM Cut, the ship will sail away. In FireRed and LeafGreen, after the player character earns the seventh gym badge, the port will be reopened again; it is used to connect the Kanto region with the Sevii Islands.

Lavender Town
Based on: Narita
Lavender Town (シオンタウン, Shion Taun) is one of the smallest towns in the region. The town is believed to be haunted by Ghost-type Pokémon. Residents of the town include the kind Mr. Fuji, and the Name Rater, who allows the player character to change the nicknames of his or her Pokémon.

Celadon City
Based on: Shinjuku, Tokyo
Celadon City (タマムシシティ, Tamamushi Shiti) is the second largest city in the Kanto Region. It is home to a department store (the largest Poké Mart in Kanto), a hotel, a Game Corner and a mansion. The fourth Gym is found in Celadon City and houses Erika and her Trainers, who use mainly Grass-type Pokémon. In the Anime, it is mentioned that this city is famous for its perfumes and scents. Erika here is also the manager of a perfume company.

Fuchsia City
Based on: Tateyama
Fuchsia City (セキチクシティ, Sekichiku Shiti) is the southernmost city on the Kanto mainland. It houses the Safari Zone and a Pokémon zoo. Koga is the Fuchsia City Gym Leader, and he uses Poison-type Pokémon. His gym contains invisible walls that force the player character to go around while battling Trainers. In Gold, Silver, and Crystal, he is replaced by his daughter, Janine, since Koga was accepted into the Elite Four.

Saffron City
Saffron City (ヤマブキシティ, Yamabuki Shiti) is the largest city of Kanto, possibly based on Tokyo. It is most notable for housing Silph Co., a massive office complex that spans 11 floors. It is also notable for having two separate gyms, though one is unofficial.

Cinnabar Island
Based on: Izu Ōshima
Cinnabar Island (グレンじま or グレンタウン, Guren-jima or Guren Taun) is home to a laboratory and an old, abandoned mansion. You can go to the laboratory to trade some Pokémon and identify the fossils found in Pewter City and Mt. Moon. The Gym is initially locked; after retrieving the key from the Pokémon Mansion, the player character can challenge the Gym Leader Blaine, a Fire-type Pokémon Trainer.

Other locations

Viridian Forest
Viridian Forest (トキワのもり, Tokiwa no Mori) is a forest that lies between Viridian City and Pewter City. The woods are filled with a large quantity of Bug Pokémon and Bug-using Trainers. Inside, the Pokémon franchise's mascot, Pikachu, can be found. In Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the forest has been cut down and the tall grass removed, so wild Pokémon cannot be caught there anymore. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Viridian Forest made a return.

Mt. Moon
Mt. Moon (オツキミやま, Otsukimi-yama) is a mountain that lies between Pewter City and Cerulean City. As it cannot be climbed, player characters must hike through the cave area. It is a three-floor dungeon with multiple paths. At the end of the path, a Super Nerd holds two fossils. After the player character defeats him, he concedes and lets the player character take one fossil, which can become either Omanyte or Kabuto. In the Anime, it is shown as a worship place for Clefairy.

Cerulean Cave
Near the city is the Cerulean Cave (ハナダのどうくつ, Hanada no Dōkutsu), popularly known as the "Unknown Dungeon" (ななしのどうくつ, Nanashi no Dōkutsu). It is an optional dungeon filled with high-leveled Pokémon and is the home to the strongest legendary Pokémon in Kanto, Mewtwo. The dungeon is so fearsome that a guard blocks the entrance, and will not let the player character through until he or she has beaten the Elite Four. In FireRed and LeafGreen, it cannot be accessed until the player character has repaired the machine on One Island.

Rock Tunnel
Rock Tunnel (イワヤマトンネル, Iwa Yama Tonneru) lit. "rock mountain tunnel" is a pitch-black cave that connects Cerulean City and Lavender Town. Unlike later games, the cave is not completely dark. The walls of the cave can still be seen which allows the player character to go through without the use of the HM Flash.

Diglett's Cave
Diglett's Cave is a long tunnel that was dug by wild Diglett and Dugtrio. Its entrances are south of Pewter City and east of Vermilion City. After the Trainer enters Cerulean City, the only foot-path back to Pewter City, Viridian City, and Pallet Town is through this cave. Wild Diglett and Dugtrio can be found in here.

Forest of Pikachu
Forest of Pikachu was a small forest clearing that had clans of Pikachu. It was only in the anime. The main protagonist Ash Ketchum and the group came here as they find other Pikachu in their adventure. Ash also decides to leave his Pikachu in this forest thinking it was good for it to stay here but changes his mind later.

Safari Zone
The Safari Zone (サファリゾーン, Safari Zōn) is a wide-open area in Fuchsia City where the player character can play a Pokémon-catching game. For a small fee, the player characters are given thirty Safari Balls (a special type of Poké Ball that is green) and may capture Pokémon in the Safari Zone until they have walked 500 steps. player characters may not use Pokémon of their own to battle the wild Pokémon in the Safari Zone. Several species of Pokémon are found nowhere else. In Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the Safari Zone is not available because Baoba is on vacation. It reappears in FireRed and LeafGreen, the option to save while there is removed; this could have been because of the Glitch City bug.

Seafoam Island
The Seafoam Islands (ふたごじま, Futago-jima) are a set of caves between Fuchsia City and Cinnabar Island. The legendary Pokémon Articuno resides in this area. During the second generation, as Cinnabar Island was destroyed by a volcano, Blaine moved his gym to the Seafoam Islands. Articuno has fled. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Seafoam Islands return and Articuno returns.

Power Plant
The Power Plant (むじんはつでんしょ, Mujin Hatsudensho) lit. "unmanned power plant" is an abandoned building found at the end of a waterway just before the entrance to Rock Tunnel. At the end of the building is the legendary Pokémon Zapdos. In Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the Power Plant has been reactivated and is used to run the Magnet Train. Zapdos is no longer there.

Victory Road
The Kanto Victory Road (チャンピオンロード, Chanpion Rōdo) is a cave that holds the only way to the Indigo Plateau, accessed to the west and north of Viridian City. The protagonist must have all eight badges to enter. Victory Road contains many high-level Pokémon, including the legendary Pokémon Moltres in the original Red and Blue versions of Pokémon. However, in the FireRed and LeafGreen remakes, Moltres has been moved to the Mt. Ember on the Sevii Islands.

Indigo Plateau
The Indigo Plateau (セキエイこうげん, Sekiei Kōgen) is the headquarters of the Pokémon League, located in northwest Kanto. In order to reach Indigo Plateau, Trainers must collect all eight Gym Badges of Kanto or Johto and pass through Victory Road, a cave located at the foot of the Plateau.

About region

Johto is a region connected to the western part of Kanto. It was introduced in Generation II, Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Pokémon Crystal, later seen in their remakes, HeartGold and SoulSilver. The third, fourth, and fifth seasons of the anime were also set there. In the games, all its cities either have plant-themed or color-themed names. Johto is mainly based on Western Japan, especially the Kansai region of Japan, with some elements of Chūbu and Shikoku. There are old-fashioned cities reminiscent of Nara and Kyoto and a modern commercial city reminiscent of Osaka. Some inhabitants speak the Kansai dialect in the Japanese releases of the game.

The mythology surrounding the Johto region features Ho-Oh, the Rainbow Pokémon guardian of the skies, and Lugia, the Diving Pokémon guardian of the seas, who previously perched on the Bell and Brass Towers respectively in Ecruteak City. When the Brass Tower burned down in a storm, Lugia flew away, and three Pokémon died in the process. Ho-Oh revived these Pokémon, creating Raikou, Entei and Suicune. Lugia's home, the Whirl Islands, were also created when the Pokémon dispelled a war over a singular island, splitting it into four islands and making them its home, producing powerful whirlpools to protect itself. Celebi, the Time Travel Pokémon, also calls Johto its home, residing in the Ilex Forest where it brings Pokémon and Trainers forward and back in time.

100 previously unknown Pokémon reside in Johto. In the Generation II games, the player character's hometown is New Bark Town, where they can choose either Chikorita, a grass type, Cyndaquil,a fire type or Totodile, a water type as his/her first Pokémon.

In anime, Johto is the home region of Jimmy and his friends.

About region

Hoenn is a region in the Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire games.

Hoenn is based on the island of Kyūshū region in Japan and lies to the southwest of Kanto and Johto in the Pokémon world. It is the first of the two Sea Regions, the other being Alola. According to Pokémon legend, the Hoenn region was formed by the Legendary Continent Pokémon, Groudon raising the land and the Legendary Sea Basin Pokémon, Kyogre, expanding the sea. The Hoenn region contains its own Pokémon League called the Hoenn League, and its own Elite Four, unlike Johto and Kanto which share their Elite Four in the video games. Routes in Hoenn are numbered from 101 to 134 and do not follow sequentially from routes in Kanto-Johto, which were numbered 1 to 48.

Cities in Hoenn appear to be named after colors, similarly to Kanto's cities.

The Advanced Generation series in the anime occur here, as protagonist Ash Ketchum and company explore this new region featuring more than 100 new Pokémon. There is also an island called "Mirage Island" and it is located between Routes 111 and 112. LaRousse City, which was the setting for the animated film Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys, is in the eastern part of Hoenn. It is the first Pokémon region to feature a desert-like environment. After Ash's journey in the Kalos region, Serena decided to travel through Hoenn, currently competing in Pokémon Contests.

Cities and towns

Littleroot Town
Littleroot Town (ミシロタウン, Mishiro Taun) is a small town with only three buildings and is the hometown of the protagonist's rival, who is Professor Birch's child and is where Professor Birch's Lab is located. At the beginning of the story of the games, the protagonist moves into this town. It is based on Sasebo, Nagasaki, in Japan. Among the three buildings is Professor Birch's laboratory. Unlike in the previous Pokémon games, the player character does not receive his or her first Pokémon in the lab, but in the tall grass to the north, where the player character has to save Professor Birch by battling the wild Poochyena or Zigzagoon that was attacking him. One of the other two houses is the home of the protagonist, depending on your character gender.

Oldale Town
Oldale Town (コトキタウン, Kotoki Taun) is the second town that the player character visits. It is the first town that the player character visits that has a Pokémart and Pokémon Center.

Petalburg City
Petalburg City (トウカシティ, Tōka Shiti) is located in the southwest region of Hoenn. The gym leader is Norman, the player character's father, who uses Normal-type Pokémon. The player character also first meets Wally here.

Rustboro City
Rustboro City (カナズミシティ, Kanazumi Shiti) is north of Petalburg City and houses the first gym leader that the player character can battle, Roxanne. She specializes in Rock-type Pokémon. It also includes the Devon Corporation, a large company that creates many items for trainers. A Pokémon Trainers' School is situated here.

Dewford Town
Dewford Town (ムロ島 or ムロタウン, Muro-jima or Muro Taun) is the second town that features a gym. The Gym Leader is Brawly, who uses Fighting-type Pokémon.

Slateport City
Slateport City (カイナシティ, Kaina Shiti) is a large city with a marketplace for Secret Base items and a ferry link to Lilycove City. Slateport City also features the Oceanic Museum, a museum that is full of items and objects recovered from the sea. In the South Central part of Slateport, there is a market, featuring the Energy Guru, who sells the stat-enhancing Vitamins (Calcium, Iron, etc.).

Mauville City
Mauville City (キンセツシティ, Kinsetsu Shiti) is a junction city. Roads from Mauville lead west to Verdanturf Town and Rustboro City, south to Slateport City, east to Fortree City and Lilycove City, and north to Fallarbor Town and Lavaridge Town. The Mauville City Gym Leader is Wattson, an Electric-type trainer.

Verdanturf Town
Verdanturf Town (シダケタウン, Shidake Taun) is a small town with only one major landmark. In Ruby and Sapphire, the Normal Rank Contest Hall is here. In Emerald, it is replaced by a Battle Tent, a test to see how loyal your Pokémon are. The prize is a Nest Ball, obtainable only in Verdanturf Town.

Fallarbor Town
Fallarbor Town (ハジツゲタウン, Hajitsuge Taun) lies north of Mt. Chimney. Most of its inhabitants work in agriculture; the soil is very fertile because of its high content of volcanic ash. In Ruby and Sapphire, the town is home to the Super Rank Pokémon Contest Hall. In Emerald, it is replaced by the Battle Tent.

Lavaridge Town
Lavaridge Town (フエンタウン, Fuen Taun) is located at the foothills of Mt. Chimney. The Lavaridge Pokémon Center is connected to a hot spring, which is what Lavaridge Town is famous for all over the Hoenn region. An old lady in front of the hot springs will give the player character a Pokémon egg, which hatches into Wynaut. The Gym Leader of Lavaridge is Flannery, who uses Fire-types.

Fortree City
Fortree City (ヒワマキシティ, Hiwamaki Shiti) is a city built atop the trees (everything except the Pokémon Center, the Poké Mart and the Gym), giving it its name. The Gym Leader is Winona, who uses Flying-type Pokémon. An invisible Kecleon is found near here.

Lilycove City
Lilycove City (ミナモシティ, Minamo Shiti) is a port city in northeast Hoenn. It houses a huge department store, an art museum, and a contest hall. In Ruby and Sapphire, it is the Master Rank Hall, and in Emerald, all Pokémon Contests are located here.

Mossdeep City
Mossdeep City (トクサネシティ, Tokusane Shiti) is an island city in the north-east of Hoenn. It is based on Tanegashima, Japan. The Gym Leaders are the twins Tate and Liza, who specialize in Psychic-types.

Sootopolis City
Sootopolis City (ルネシティ, Rune Shiti) is a city built in the cone of an extinct volcano. It is based on Santorini, Greece. The player character enters the city for the first time from underwater. The last Gym is located here, as well as the Cave of Origin. If the player character follows the plot, his or her first visit to Sootopolis City is during the time the weather in Hoenn has been disrupted by Groudon (Ruby), Kyogre (Sapphire), or both (Emerald). Player characters can head to Sootopolis City at an earlier time as long as they have received the Dive HM and Mossdeep Gym badge. Sootopolis City is the home of the last gym that can be challenged by the player character, whose leader is Wallace in Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire, and Juan in Emerald, both of whom specialize in Water types.

Pacifidlog Town
Pacifidlog Town (キナギタウン, Kinagi Taun) is an isolated settlement in the south of Hoenn. The entire town is said to have been built on top of a colony of Corsola. The town uses wooden planks to connect the buildings together, and as such, the player character can neither run nor use his or her bicycle here. Although the town itself contains little of interest, it is in close proximity to the Sealed Chamber, Mirage Island, and Sky Pillar.

Ever Grande City
Ever Grande City (サイユウシティ, Saiyū Shiti) consists of two parts: the area before Victory Road, which has a Pokémon Center, and the area after it, which contains the Hoenn Pokémon League building.

Landmarks

Petalburg Woods
Petalburg Woods is a Hoenn forest. This is the only place to catch Slakoth. A Team Aqua or Team Magma grunt with a Level 9 Poochyena attacks a person working for Devon Corporation here. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in a cut scene you can see Zinnia.

Devon Corporation
The Devon Corporation is very similar to Silph Co. from Kanto and is the Hoenn equivalent. It is also rumored to run the Pokémarts in Hoenn. Devon Corp. is owned by Mr. Stone, and it plays an important role in the games, allowing the player character to receive certain important items and revive fossils into Pokémon. The Devon Corp. headquarters are the target for robbery by Team Aqua and Team Magma. After the player character stops their crimes, Mr. Stone will ask the player character to deliver a letter to his son Steven Stone, and a Package to Captain Stern, in Slateport City. He will reward the player character with his or her PokéNav.The player character can also revive fossils here.

Rusturf Tunnel
The Rusturf Tunnel is a tunnel between Rustboro City and Verdanturf Town. Its name is a portmanteau of the first and last parts of the two cities that the tunnel joins. In the video games, construction has stopped because of concerns over disturbing the Whismur in the cave. Once the player character has the HM Rock Smash, he or she can break a rock to open the tunnel up and get the HM Strength.

Granite Cave
The Granite Cave is an area to the Northwest of Dewford Town. In the video games, a hiker at the entrance will give the HM Flash to the player character, which can be used to increase vision in the pitch-dark basement (similar to the Rock Tunnel in the Kanto region). The player character must go through the cave to deliver a letter to a man named Steven Stone. It is the only place in the games where player characters may obtain Nosepass.

Meteor Falls
The Meteor Falls is a waterfall-filled cave located near Fallarbor Town. Lunatone can be found here in Sapphire Version and Solrock can be found here in Ruby and Emerald.

Mt. Pyre
Mt. Pyre is a Pokémon graveyard, similar to Kanto's Pokémon Tower. It consists of two areas: the inside, a "cave" filled with Pokémon trainers that functions as a graveyard, and the outer mountain, which can be reached by exiting from inside. Mt. Pyre is considered the counterpart of the Cave of Origin (the cave where life begins), as Mt. Pyre is "the place where life ends". Atop the mountain is an old couple who guard two orbs, the Red Orb, and Blue Orb. They are the grandparents of Phoebe of the Elite Four.

Cave of Origin
The Cave of Origin is located at the north end of Sootopolis City. It is guarded by Wallace /Juan of Sootopolis Gym and is said to be a cave where life begins. Its opposite landmark is Mt. Pyre, said to be the place where life ends. Residents of Sootopolis are not permitted to enter the Cave of Origin. The contents of the cave are different in each game: In Ruby and Sapphire, the player character finds Groudon or Kyogre, respectively, and must defeat or capture it to proceed. In Emerald, Wallace is inside the Cave of Origin and knows how to stop the scuffle between Kyogre and Groudon.

Hoenn Victory Road|Victory Road
Victory Road (チャンピオンロード, Chanpion Rōdo, Champion Road in Japanese) is a large cave that leads to the Pokémon League. It holds many trainers aspiring to reach the Pokémon League. During some point in Victory Road, a boy named Wally will catch up to the player character and battle. The player character originally mentored Wally at the beginning of the game, and Wally has matured into a strong opponent. It is accessed from the southern portion of Ever Grande and requires Rock Smash, Strength, and Waterfall to traverse. Since most of the cave is dark, it is harder to explore without the use of Flash.

Sky Pillar
The Sky Pillar is an abandoned tower to the north-east of Pacifidlog Town that is home to very strong Pokémon. Though an optional dungeon in Ruby and Sapphire, it plays a major role in Emerald; the player character needs to go to Sky Pillar to summon Rayquaza to solve the fight between Kyogre and Groudon in Sootopolis City. When the player character reaches the top of Sky Pillar (in Emerald, the second visit), Rayquaza can be fought and captured.

Battle Tower/Battle Frontier
In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, the Battle Tower (バトルタワー, Batoru Tawā) is located on a small island. Its motto is "Win it all and be the best, Trainers!" To access the facility, the player character must first defeat the Elite Four, then receive the S.S. Tidal Ticket from the protagonist's father, Norman. After journeying on the newly completed ship, the player character will gain the option to visit the Battle Tower.

Southern Island
The Southern Island can only be unlocked using the Eon Ticket, which can only be obtained in the game from a special event, or by mixing records with someone who has the Ticket. Southern Island is located, as the name suggests, in the south of the region, just west of the Battle Frontier. One cannot Surf to get to the island; instead, they must board the ferry at Lilycove City with an Eon Ticket to get there. The island only exists to enable the player character to get both Latias and Latios.

About region

Sinnoh is the fourth region of the Pokémon Series and is the setting of the Nintendo DS games Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, as well as their Nintendo Switch remakes Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and the prequel game Legends: Arceus, where it was known as Hisui during ancient times. It is also the setting of the Diamond and Pearl series of the anime.

Like the previous regions in the previous games, Sinnoh features a broad range of environments for the player character to explore. The region is mountainous and temperate; for the first time in a Pokémon RPG, it features snowy routes. While this region's location with relation to other regions portrayed in the franchise is unknown, Ash Ketchum refers to Sinnoh as an island during the English dub of the last episode of season 9 of the anime, while Professor Oak mentions that it's located to the north of the Kanto/Johto landmass. The in-game map shows that the region consists of about 70% land and 30% water. There are thirty routes in Sinnoh numbered 201 to 230 and, like the Hoenn region before it, do not follow sequentially from the previous region's routes: routes in Hoenn, the previous region, were numbered 101 to 134.

Sinnoh has four lakes, each of which houses a legendary Pokémon: Lake Acuity houses Uxie, Lake Valor houses Azelf, Lake Verity houses Mesprit and the secret Sendoff Spring houses Giratina inside Turnback Cave. Sinnoh is based on the geography of the Japanese island of Hokkaidō, the southern tip of the island of Sakhalin and the disputed island of Kunashir (Kunashiri).

Sinnoh features an extensive underground area called "The Underground" (lKnown as the "The Grand Underground" in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl). In this area, a Player can dig for stones, items and spheres, which can be exchanged for items with underground barterers. This is where fossils can be found instead of obtaining one and not being able to collect the other such as in Pokémon Emerald Version. The player character can also use DS Wireless Communication compete with player characters within the area to a game of 'Capture the Flag'.

Cities and towns

Twinleaf
Twinleaf Town (フタバタウン, Futaba Taun) is the town in which the protagonists of Diamond and Pearl, the player character and their archrival, reside and from which they begin their journey across the region of Sinnoh, located at the south of Route 201, southwest of Sandgem Town, southeast of Lake Verity, and north of a small pond where the player goes to in the beginning.

Sandgem
Sandgem Town (マサゴタウン, Masago Taun) houses the laboratory of Professor Rowan, an accomplished professor whose expertise concerns Pokémon, and features the game's first Pokémon Center and Poké Mart. It is also home to Professor Rowan's assistant Dawn/Lucas, and is where the player character gets the National Pokédex after seeing 150 Pokémon of the Sinnoh region.

Jubilife City
Jubilife City (コトブキシティ, Kotobuki Shiti) houses a television station, the Trainer's School, "Pokétch Company", the company which makes the Pokétch, and the Global Trade Station or GTS, which allows for trading over the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Oreburgh City
Oreburgh City (クロガネシティ, Kurogane Shiti) is a coal-mining city, home to the first Sinnoh region Gym Leader - Roark. The city is powered by coal and it also houses a museum which revives the fossils of ancient Pokémon.

Floaroma Town

About region

Unova is the fifth main series region and is the setting of Pokémon Black and White and Pokémon Black and White Versions 2. Unlike the previous regions, which were based on different islands around Japan, Unova was based on an area that spans two American States, New York and New Jersey. This land is distant from all other currently known regions and thus has different Pokémon. Also because of this, the Route numbers restart at 1. For those who have not been playing the other games, this fact can be confusing. It has an incredibly varied landscape; with two mountain ranges, woodland areas, marshes and a desert spread across its islands. The map of Unova has nineteen major settlements, thirty-one places of interest and twenty-three routes marked on it.

In the sequel game, ice and snow have covered most of the region, changing its landscape and the towns located around it. There are also even different Gym Leaders from the previous game. A reason behind the change of landscape lay in the awakening of Reshiram and Zekrom in the previous adventure.

Cities and towns

Nuvema Town
Nuvema Town is the first town in Unova, which is a very small area. This town is the dwelling of the player character and their rivals/childhood friends, Bianca and Cheren and it is also where Professor Juniper's Lab is located and is where the player character begins their journey. It is connected to Route 1 and is on the southeastern coast of the Unova region. This is where the player first starts out in Pokémon Black and White.

Aspertia
Aspertia City is the first city in Unova in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 that has a Pokémon Center, a Pokémon Gym, and several miscellaneous buildings. It is the first starting location for the player character that is a city. Aspertia City's Normal-type Gym Leader is Cheren. From this mountainous place, all of Unova can be seen.

Floccesy Town
Floccesy Town is a small town located in the southwestern part of Unova. It is home to former Unova champion, Alder. Floccesy Ranch and Pledge Grove lie near Floccesy Town. This area is only accessible in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2.

Virbank City
Virbank City is a city located in the southwestern part of Unova. It is home to the Pokéstar Studios. Trainers can challenge the Virbank City Gym against the rocking Poison-type Gym Leader Roxie for the Toxic Badge. There is also a port located at the edge of the town where it gives you access to a ship that you can take to Castelia City. This area is only accessible in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2.

Accumula Town
Accumula Town is a small town renowned for its hills and great views. It is here Professor Juniper tells you about the Pokémon Center and the shop inside it to help prepare you for your journey. After exiting the Pokémon Center, you encounter Cheren, who leads you to the town plaza, where you see Team Plasma for the first time with Ghetsis, who gives a speech to the crowd about liberating Pokémon so that they can truly be equals with people. However, his words do not move the crowd much. After Team Plasma and the crowd leaves, a mysterious N gets left behind and asks you to battle him, he is shown to support Team Plasma's wishes to liberate Pokémon and is later revealed to be the King of Team Plasma.

Striaton City
Striaton City is the first city you enter in Pokémon Black and White. This city features the first gym, run by the Gym Leaders Cilan, Chili, and Cress. The Gym Leader you battle depends on your starter type, which will be at a type disadvantage to the Leader's Pokémon. In addition to this, Professor Juniper's friend Fennel lives here and does her research into the Dream World. This is where you'll need to go in order to send your Pokémon from your game to the Dream World and back again. Upon seeking out a Munna to obtain the Dream Mist Fennel needs to help operate her machine, you head for the Dream Yard and reunite with Bianca. With her, you enter the deepest part of the Dream Yard and find a Munna being abused by two Team Plasma grunts who are also after the Dream Mist. Despite beating both grunts in Pokémon Battle, the player character and Bianca are unable to prevent the grunts from further injuring the Munna. Luckily, a Munna's evolved form Musharna comes to its rescue and uses its Dream Mist to fool the grunts into thinking Ghetsis is scolding them and causes them to flee. Fennel comes and finds some leftover Dream Mist and thanks the player character for their cooperation while Bianca decides to chase after Munna to capture it. Also, if you speak to a Trainer in the Dream Yard, you will receive one of the three element monkey Pokémon that has a disadvantage against the player character's starter.

Nacrene City
Nacrene City is an incredibly old city with rail tracks and warehouses that have been abandoned for over 100 years. It has a massive museum dedicated to archaeology and is home to the second Gym of Unova, run by the Gym Leader Lenora. Upon winning at the Gym, Team Plasma arrives and steals the skull from a Dragonite skeleton on display, believing it to hold the essence of Reshiram/Zekrom (depends on version). Also, the player character briefly reunites with Cheren and Bianca while meeting the third Unova Gym Leader, the artistic Burgh. Per Lenora's request, the player character joins Burgh in investigating Pinwheel forest to return the skull. After you go to the Desert Resort and search for the light stone/dark stone (depends on version) Lenora calls for you and says she has the stone. You receive the stone and are told to head to the final Gym Leader in Unova to learn more about the legend. If you go back to the Desert Resort, in Relic Castle, there is a backpacker who will let you choose from two fossils and you can go to Nacrene Gym to revive the fossil and you'll get a new Pokémon!

Castelia City
Castelia City is a journey across the Skyarrow Bridge which leads you to this thriving metropolis beside the sea. Unlike previous cities, this one is much, much bigger. It features a variety of areas and utilizes the DS's 3D graphic engine to show the city from a wide range of camera angles and uses a vast amount of interactivity. There are countless skyscrapers piercing the clouds, five piers which harbor boats and, of course, the Castelia City Gym. Upon arrival in the city, the player character decides to challenge Burgh, only to arrive at the Gym to see Cheren has won his badge already. Trying to challenge Burgh himself/herself, the player character bumps into Burgh who explains that there is trouble brewing in the city and is told to met him at the largest pier. There, the payer finds Bianca again, but she is accompanied by another Trainer named Iris. It is revealed that Team Plasma has stolen Bianca's Munna and have eluded Iris in her search through the city. The player character and Burgh find Team Plasma has hidden out in the building directly in front of Burgh's Gym. There, the player character once again meets Ghetsis and another of his colleagues he calls a fellow member of the Seven Sages. Through negotiation, Munna is returned to Bianca and Team Plasma escapes through use of a smoke screen. The player character then challenges Burgh and the Gym and earns the Insect Badge. Upon leaving Castelia City, the player character is challenged by Bianca to battle her Pokémon to see how they've grown. Castelia City is Unova's largest city.

Nimbasa City
Nimbasa City is a bustling city of entertainment, which has it's very own theme park with the fourth gym inside. After riding roller coasters, you can challenge the fourth Gym Leader of the Unova region. The Musical Theater is located here, as well as two sports stadiums and the Battle Subway. It is known that if Castelia City is the place of business, Nimbasa City is the place of leisure. Upon arriving in Nimbasa City, the player character saves the Daycare man from Team Plasma and meets Bianca yet again. The player character then has the choice to follow her to the theater or head to the amusement park to follow the Team Plasma grunts. If the player character follows Bianca, both are gifted Prop cases for their Pokémon if they choose to enter them in the Musical Theater. Upon exiting the theater, Bianca's Dad arrives and tries to take her back home. Luckily, Elesa arrives and convinces him to let Bianca continue journeying to discover herself. If the player character chooses to follow Team Plasma, they arrive in front of the Ferris Wheel and meet N again. He explains that he is the king of Team Plasma and that he seeks to liberate Pokémon from people. The two grunts arrive to save their king, but N instead decides to cover their escape. After beating N, the player character learns of N's plan to revive one of the legendary Pokémon and use it to help his cause. However, he then adds that if the player character wishes to stop him, he/she should revive the legendary Pokémon's equal. Upon exiting Nimbasa City, the player character is once again confronted by Cheren for a battle, After the battle, both are met by Elesa, who introduces them to Alder, the Unova champion. Cheren becomes agitated by Alder as he questions his view of what becoming the champion means. They are then brought to the Charizard Bridge to be allowed access to the next city and challenge the Gym Leader.

Driftveil City

Upon arriving in town, the player character and Cheren are blamed by Clay for the escape of Team Plasma due to the bridge's lowering. However, they are offered a deal, capture Team Plasma and they can challenge his Gym. Working together, the player character and Cheren find Team Plasma hiding in a Cold Storage container with one of the Seven Sages. Upon the player character and Cheren's defeat of the grunts, Clay arrives with Cold Storage workers to arrest Team Plasma. However, once the player character leaves afterwards and arrives at the Gym for a battle, Ghetsis has arrived with back up and has the captured operatives of Team Plasma released into his custody. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, the Pokémon World Tournament is where the Cold Storage used to be.

The player character meets Skyla and is led to Celestial Tower. There, Skyla has the player character ring the bell on top to learn what kind of person the player character is. Upon learning the answer, Skyla returns to the Gym to be challenged. After earning the sixth Unova badge, the player character once again battles Team Plasma's king and has his or her Pokémon's words listened to. N does feel some sorrow over having to separate Pokémon and people who truly care for each other like the player character does, but still plans to go on ahead. However, the player character must defeat Brycen in a Gym battle first to continue the story. Upon winning and leaving the Gym, the player character reunites with both Cheren and Bianca. However, Brycen exits the Gym and tells Cheren to wait for a Gym battle as something is amiss. They head for Dragon Spiral tower. Inside are numerous Team Plasma members and one of the Seven Sages. With the help of Cheren and Brycen, the player character makes his/her way up to the top to find N has awoken Reshiram/Zekrom (depends on which version) and explains that once he defeats Alder, he will have the authority to make his plan become reality. N then tells the player character to find the dark stone/light stone and awaken Zekrom/Reshiram and counter his plans at the Pokémon League if he/she dares before flying off.

Opelucid City

It is here the player character learns more about the Unova founding myth and the Pokémon that caused it. Upon winning the eighth Gym badge, the player character meets up with Professor Juniper once again and is shown the way to Route 10 to head for the Pokémon League. The Gym Leader also depends on the version. In Black, it's Iris's mentor Drayden and in White, it's Iris herself. This is possibly to coincide with the Yin/Yang theme the games have.
